The amount of PFAS in flatfish (flounder) in the eastern part of the Western Scheldt is more than 800 times higher than the standard for fish used by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. This is evident from an indicative study by professor of environmental chemistry and toxicology Jacob de Boer (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) at the request of the citizen collective Grondrecht. 'The concentrations found are really gigantic', says de Boer. 'Eating fish from the Western Scheldt is out of the question.'
