HUMAN RIGHTS LEAGUE: The PFOS scandal through a human rights lens

The PFOS scandal is the largest environmental scandal in recent Flemish history. Environmental pollution is often approached through environmental law: to what extent is PFOS pollution in conflict with Flemish environmental law regulations (emission standards, permit requirements, etc.), and who is responsible for this?

Complementary to this, however, this issue can also be viewed through a human rights lens. When environmental pollution has a negative impact on people, and certainly when human health is endangered, the government also has human rights obligations to protect against this. This contribution first examines what these human rights obligations are. This forms the background for the second part of this article, in which the conversation is entered into with environmental lawyer Isabelle Larmuseau, in order to shed light on the question of whether human rights were actually violated in the PFOS dossier.
