The environmental permit that the province of Antwerp approved in September 2020 gives chemical company 3M the right to discharge thousands of kilos of PFBS and PFBA into the Scheldt until June 2022. These are substances that, like PFOS, belong to the PFAS group. Nine months before the province gave the green light, the European Union added PFBS to the list of substances that may pose serious risks to public health and the environment.
