The site of the American chemical company 3M in Zwijndrecht emitted large quantities of HFC-23 for years. This is an extremely heavy greenhouse gas. The additional emission of more than 120 tonnes of (mainly) HFC-23 that was 'suddenly' detected in 2019 is the equivalent of 1.78 megatons of CO2 or approximately 4% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the whole of Flanders. The Flemish Environment Agency is aware of the situation. This led to a revision of the greenhouse gas emissions reported by our country for the period from 1990 to 2018 to the European Commission and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
